The MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) is merely a means of rateing philtre efficiency through a numbering scheme ranging from 1 to 16. The lower ratings (1-4) are the least effective and only eliminate up to 80% of pollutants. This ranking is typical of fibreglass philtres, which are removable or washable. Electronic philtres strip up to 98 percent of the most pollutants at higher ratings (13-16).
A MERV rating higher is not always better
Higher MERV philtres are effective at blocking pollutants but can add to the running cost of your HVAC. They reduce the flow of air, which can make the machine work harder. Lower MERV philtres are more energy effective, but they are unlikely to eliminate pollutants that may harm anyone suffering from allergies or other respiratory problems.
